The May/June 1979 issue of Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette included a
delightful sketch of a little Porter Steam Dummy in the column of the last
Dick Andrews. that sketch is the inspiration for this model.
Dave Hoffman used that sketch in his catalog for many years with the
permission of Bob Brown, editor/publisher of the Gazette.
Prototype Steam Dummys -- called "noise-less street
motors", were an interim form of motive power for street railways,
better than horses and mules. Steam Dummys, although designed for
street use, found their ways to logging lines, short lines, and other
operators looking for i9nsexpensive small locomotives for limited use.
This all-brass model features a lost-wax brass casting superstructure
(with stamped sheet brass roof) which provides detail and weight for good
pulling capacity.

Locomotives:
This line of locomotives is being sold as part of the Ginza Model Railroad
Club of
Japan. Mast of the locomotives come Ready-to-Run, some are
offered as
kit and some are offered both ways. All Kobayashi
locos are
small
0-4-0 varieties. Some are German field railway locomotives,
some
of the
engines have tenders, while some are tank type locomotives. The
line of
loco KITS, requires good building skills, metric sized taps,
reamers
and other
specialized building tools. All items needed are clearly
noted
in the
instruction book.

The motor in many of the engines
and kits are from Tomix. These are
very smooth
running motors of various sizes needed for powering the kits.
Cars:
So far, there are only a
few cars offered, and only in the RTR versions.
There is a
coal hopper and a small gondola. (These cars look
similar
to those
offered by AHM, in
their old Minitrain line, and those offered
by Roco
today). There is a pair of disconnect log cars and a tipper ore
car.

TAKING ORDERS FOR
ATLAS CONVERTED HOn30 R-T-R SHAY
The long awaited third release of Atlas's N Scale Shay has finally arrived.
I
received the Shays and forwarded them to the Tom Price to convert into
HOn30 units for sale. The first of the converted Shays should arrive around
the first of July.
These Shay
locomotives are built upon the Atlas N Scale Shay chassis. The
conversion is done by adding a resin cab casting and fuel bunker. If you
special order one of these fine running models, you may have a choice of
having a wood load, coal load or a fuel oil
bunker; straight or diamond
smoke stack; your choice of road numbers and road name to complete
your model.
These
models are being built by Tom Price and
come completely built,
detailed, painted, weathered and have Micro Train
couplers installed. For
custom paint, numbering or specially applied
details, we will quote you a
price for the extra work. One advantage
over other HOn30 Shay locos is
that with the Atlas Shay (the mechanism) spare parts are
available and
that you could always return the mechanism to Atlas if there
is a serious
problem.
Due to
the unavailability of critical items for completion of
the Tom
Price Shays, the delivery time cannot be determined.
All of
the N Scale Shay bodies have been modified and the
new cabs
have been cast. It is the unavailability of the MV
Lens for
the headlight and some of the PSC detail parts, which
are
needed for completion, which are causing the delay. The
parts
need to be installed before painting is done, otherwise
these
parts could be installed by the buyer at a later time.

of road name and number, but you may elect to have it built either as an oil
